    Crazy Dog

    Jake6/27/2007

Whenever I get home from work the dog goes absolutely nuts. It’s like he hasn’t seen me in a month. Well today I got home and as I was sitting in the chair he jerked his head and smacked me in the mouth busting my lip…I know he’s a puppy but damn…Anyone have any recommendations for tranquilizers for mutts?

    Sad

    Jake6/26/2007

I used to watch WWE wrestling religiously but over the last few years the story lines have gotten flat and I lost interest. This morning I read that Chris Benoit, aka “The Rabid Wolverine”, aka “Toothless Aggression” had been found dead in his home along with his wife and child in what authorities are calling a double murder-suicide. At one time not too long ago he was at the top of the WWE and seemed to have it all. Such a fall from grace. I’ll be interested to see the toxicology report when it comes out.

10 *More* Things That Frustrate Me

    Jake6/14/2007

That’s right folks…This is round 2. If you missed round one check out The Orginal 10 Things That Frustrate Me. I’ve had this for a while and I’m about half way through round 3. So without further adieu:

    • User who come up with “catchy” ticket titles.
    • Your wittyness is not impressing anyone.

    • Users who insist on putting you on speaker phone and then talking over you while you tell them how to fix their problem.
    • Be quiet and listen…Who knows you might actually learn something.

    • Users who bitch and moan the whole time you’re helping them with their problem and question everything you ask them to do. But then when it’s fixed act like you’re their best friend.
    • Don’t think because you’re all of the sudden nice to me that I’ll forget you called me an idiot when you thought I put you on hold. Really I just muted the mic on my phone. And I do still have root access on your machine..Never forget that.

    • Users who refuse to respond to the ticket tracker generated email. So every response opens a new ticket.
    • It tells you in the response what subject to put in so it gets attached to the correct ticket!

    • Users who ask if they need to remember the password they just set.
    • No…You don’t have to..But if you want to do your job it might be helpful.

    • Users who don’t listen to me when I tell them the requirements for passwords and then promptly ask me if they just need some letters and numbers for their password.
    • Dumbass…DIAF

    • Users who keep saying “But my system is *almost* a corporate standard build so you should support it.”
    • Horseshoes and hand genades my friend…

    • Users who insist on setting up a dial up account so they can check email while on vacation for 4 days.
    • You’re not that important…The world won’t explode in 4 days without your presence.

    • Users who say “You must get tired of answering stupid questions all day long.”
    • Of course I get tired of it, thanks for reminding me. Stop calling.

    • Users who complain about “all the passwords” they have to remember.
    • You have 2 passwords to remember..I can’t dumb it down anymore..

So there you have it…Now all of you GBTW! :-)

    Justice System?

    Jake6/7/2007

Well..Today the justice system is officially a joke (as if it wasn’t broken already). I don’t even want to say the dumb bitches name on my blog but she was released from prison today after a 3 day stay. The reason? A health condition which is rumored to be her freaking out about being in jail!!

So…Yea her 45 day sentence was cut in half…Then she’s released after 3 days because she couldn’t handle jail… It’s absolutely disgusting and makes me sick to my stomach. If I had done the same thing she did I would damn sure be staying that entire 45 days. And I can just hear the laughter when I say that I can’t handle prison so I need to go home…Fucking disgusting…

    Local Backups vs Online Backups

    Jake6/1/2007

I’m very paranoid about backing up my important data. I know that hard drives fail, computers die at the most inopportune times. That being said I am very nervous about all the online backup companies that are popping up. You know the one’s “give us $4.95 a month and we’ll give you 10G of storage space.” I could never, ever be comfortable with that for a several reasons:

    • How good is the security on the servers/arrays my data is being stored on?
    • Who has access to these servers?
    • What kind of redundancy does the company have in place? (I don’t want to be told “Redundant routers, switches, hardware, and backup systems are employed to ensure high availability of the service”) I want tech specs.

Even after finding all of this out I don’t think I could put my least sensitive data up on a machine that I don’t have control over. Now this is not to say that I don’t favor, or encourge multiple backups. My backup scheme is pretty paranoid. I have this website along with a few others running on a shared server at Site5. I have a script setup on my work machine that does a daily rsync and pulls all new files added to an external 160G hard drive. I also have a dedicated machine at home that has the same script and pulls another backup daily to a 750G Raid 5 array. I have yet another script on my home machine that moves a copy to another external 250G hard drive attached to it. And that’s just all my websites. I also keep them in a SubVersion repository just in case I need to do a fast restore to test something. My really important files live on another encrypted hard drive. So..yea..I’m a bit paranoid about backups :-)

But what does “Joe User” know about it. They see this great offer and are pulled in by the attraction of access their data from anywhere. I can certainly believe that someone will upload credit card info, old receipts or some other very sensitive papers. And in this day and age of identity thieves one can’t be too careful with sensitive information.

I’d be very interested to hear if anyone is making use of these “Internet Storage Solutions”. Also what do you do to ensure that you have working backups? I’ve seen many a SysAdmin not test their backups and when the time comes to restore for real the backup hasn’t successfully run in several months. On each of my backups the script will email me if something fails. I also get a weekly email of the last 7 lines of the log file that the script generates just as a precaution.

    Credit Cards

    Jake

Sabrina over at Sabrina’s Money Matters post an entry that really got me thinking about my sorted credit past.

For many years I was afraid of credit cards…Well..Not actually afraid of the actual plastic but of what came with it. When I was younger and in the Army I made some really bad choices with credit cards and credit in general. At that time I wasn’t thinking about when I would want to buy a home, or a new ride, I was 18 years old and didn’t really understand the concept of paying money back. I just wanted “stuff” and “more stuff”.

I got into a situation where credit was being thrown at me and I caught ever single offer. And maxed them out. Then came the time when I left the Army and had no job lined up. I made the decision to file Chapter 7 Bankruptcy which at the time seemed like a good idea. Not so much..I got out of all the debts I had but I had no car, no credit, and no job. I spent 3 months working at Wal-Mart as an overnight stocker and had plenty of time to realize that I had not made the best decision.

The years passed by and I did what most people do to get their credit back on track. Nothing. About a year ago I realized that my credit score had gone up 50 points in 6 years. So I started actively looking at ways to revive my score. I read books, searched for hours on the ‘net and soaked up every bit of info I could. I ended up applying for 2 credit cards with small limits, $300 on each card. I then used the cards for everyday purchases such as gas, groceries, dinner with my girlfriend, etc. Then before the due date I would pay it off completely. In just a year my credit score jumped 162 points!

This strategy has allowed me to buy my first home at a really, really low interest rate. I still have the cards and I still use them for everyday purchases. I’m not as good about paying them off in full before the due date but I still pay 3x the minimum amount due. It took a lot of time and I really hated parting with such large sums of money at one time but the payoff in the end was totally worth it.
