Rough Weekend

So Friday really turned out to not be my day. I woke up around 3am and could feel my throat was very sore and it really hurt to swallow. I got up and got something to drink and headed back to bed hoping it was just dry and would be better when I went to work.

I woke up a bit early and hoped into the shower still feeling the sore throat and now a touch of nausea..I head into work and the longer I was at work the worse I felt. It peaked around noon and I felt like I needed to go home. I wasn’t able to think about food or even water without getting sick to my stomach again. I im’d Kate and told her I was probably going to be heading home since I wasn’t feeling well but I was going to try and stick out the day.

So I’m up in the server room working on some things and my back starts to hurt. It had been hurting most of the morning but I didn’t think much about it. About 20 min later I almost reach the point of passing out because my back hurt so bad. I im’d Kate again and asked her if she could come pick me up and take me home since I had ridden the bike into work. In the 20-25 min it took her to get to work to pick me up my back pain increased by at least a factor of 20…It hurt so bad that I couldn’t find anyway to make it stop hurting. When Kate got to work she asked if I wanted to go to Urgent Care or the Hospital. I just said I didn’t care. I wanted to go someplace where they would make it stop hurting.

We get to the hospital and I was moved through very quickly due to the extreme pain I was in. I would say within 25 min of getting to the hospital I had an I.V. in my arm and 1mg of Dilaudid which really didn’t do much for the pain but it did feel pretty weird..More on that later.

I also had a throat culture done which came back positive for Strep Throat. Somewhere in there I had some blood drawn and my white cell count was over 18,000. Normally it ranges from 4500-8000. I got some I.V. antibiotics and some Motrin to knock down my fever. Next came another shot of Dilaudid. That’s about all I remember. That second shot knocked me on my ass. I remember my back not hurting and then actually being able to lay down on the gurney. I remember bits a pieces after that second shot. Getting released and waiting outside I remember it was raining and I was standing in it for some reason.

We got home and I ate a burger from MacDonald’s and finished my strawberry milkshake and then I went to bed. I was out within a few min of my head hitting the pillow.

Not much was done for my back and it still throbs so I was given a referral to a back specialist that I’ll follow up with next week. I’m still tired and feel very run down. I’m on antibiotics as well as a steroid and two pain meds for my back. I’m planning on taking the day off work tomorrow just to make sure the Strep Throat is no longer contagious..All in all it was not a fun weekend at all.

Thank you to my girlfriend Kate tho…She did an awesome job of keeping me calm at the hospital. I’ve not been to the doctor, much less a hospital in over 6 years. And the type of pain I was in from my back was all consuming and extremely scary. I honestly don’t know what I would have done without her there by my side. Thanks baby…I love you more and more every day and I’m proud of how you handled everything that happened..You are a super rock star :-*
