    Jake9/5/2008

So my 31st year is not off to a very good start…First strep throat and now I find out that I’ve developed an allergy to poison ivy…Awesome…I was exposed to it numerous times when I was in the Army with no effects…Now my arms and legs are covered..So here I sit with Calamine lotion but still itching..:-(

    New Blog

    Jake8/25/2008

So I’ve got another blog over at Kickstands Up. I’m currently planning a 2 week motorcycle camping trip in Oct2008. As it stands right now I’ll be going through South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Louisana, Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, and back to North Carolina. Haven’t figured out the total milage and some routes are still in question but I’m figuring ~300-350 miles a day or 8 hours whichever comes first.

Head on over and keep up with my follies…errr adventures :-D

    Loud Keyboards

    Jake7/29/2008

Loud, mechanical keyboards with their god awful clacking keys should be outlawed and anyone found to be using one should be beaten accordingly…

    That is all..Move along…

    Makes Sense

    Jake1/18/2008

So if I put a meeting in my Nokia n810 and set a reminder it would make sense to actually turn the volume up so I *hear* the alarm..

    The ‘burg

    Jake12/23/2007

We made it in last night around 5pm CST with no issues at all. Kate started out the drive and before we hit Atlanta we switched and I finished it out. Today we are in Hattiesburg at The JavaWerks so we can get internet access. The only internet access my parents have is dial up and I’m *not* going to fight with that nonsense. I’d rather make the 1.5 hour drive to find cheap, fast internet.

I apparently am not ment to use my computer when I come home. Out of the last three trips I’ve managed to forget my laptop power supply twice. Now keep in mind that I was issued two power supplies when I got the laptop. I also managed to get another travel power supply when someone left. So I have at least 3 floating around and I can’t seem to remember to bring one. I also just recently bought a Nokia n810 internet tablet and while I do have it with me, along with the power supply, I left it at my parents house today..Kate was kind enough to loan me her Sony laptop so I could check email and make this post. I may check at best buy today to see if I can find a universal power supply.

Btw, Kate’s laptop runs Windows Vista…I do feel a bit dirty after using it :-D

    Linux Saves The Day

    Jake10/22/2007

So last night Kate’s new laptop decided to corrupt it’s own boot partition for no apparent reason and throw the famous BSOD. After fooling around with Vista’s “safe mode” which was utterly useless I decided to try a Sabayon Linux live cd to see if I could pull some pics off that weren’t backed up yet.

I booted into Sabayon and started playing around with some of the included ntfs tools. I came across ntfsfix. From the man page this is what ntfsfix does:

man-page for “ntfsfix” dated January 2006, taken from ntfsprogs 2.0.0
    This web-page was last updated: 2007-10-22, 14:17 (GMT+1)
    Name
ntfsfix - fix common errors and force Windows to check NTFS
    Synopsis
    ntfsfix [options] device
    Description
ntfsfix is a utility that fixes some common NTFS problems. ntfsfix is NOT a Linux version of chkdsk. It only repairs some fundamental NTFS inconsistencies, resets the NTFS journal file and schedules an NTFS consistency check for the first boot into Windows.

You may run ntfsfix on an NTFS volume if you think it was damaged by Windows or some other way and it cannot be mounted.

I have to say I was very impressed with it. ntfsfix did exactly what it was supposed to. I rebooted the machine back into Vista and the consistency check ran and it started as expected and everything seems to be back to normal. I’m chalking this failure up to randomness but if this starts to become an everyday thing then back to Best Buy the laptop will go. Although I’m not sure I want to let Geek Squad touch the machine because of all the horror stories I’ve heard out of there.

    We shall see…

    9/11

    Jake9/11/2007

Hard to believe it’s been so long. I remember I was working for United Blood Services in Mississippi and was by myself down in Alabama at a hospital drawing blood from people who were having surgery. I had just pulled up at the hospital and a co-worker told me a plane had hit the WTC.

It didn’t click with me that it was a big plane. Maybe a single engine with some student who got lost…After setting up for my 9 donors I switched on the TV to see if the news had anything else about it. Did they ever…As I turned it on they cut from video of the first plane hitting to a live image of the second plane hitting. I remember feeling physically ill.

    30

    Jake8/31/2007

That’s right…Today is my 30th birthday. I’m still not sure how I feel about turning 30. Actually, I’m quite sure how I feel about it.. I don’t care to much for it! But, what can you do..I’m looking forward to another productive year both personally and professionally.

Not Much To Say Lately

Jake7/25/2007

Title pretty much says it all…However, Kate did get a new job aaaand a new tattoo. Head over to her site and check out her new ink. Not much going on with me. Cutting grass, trying to keep up with yard work occupies most of my Saturdays now. Not that I mind. Strangely enough it allows me time to think and I also have an mp3 player that I bought specifically with cutting grass in mind. It has no moving parts so no matter how bumpy it gets on the mower it never skips.

It only holds 1G of music but so far that’s been more than enough to get me through the yard. Sooo…yea…back to work then.

Crazy Dog

Jake6/27/2007

Whenever I get home from work the dog goes absolutely nuts. It’s like he hasn’t seen me in a month. Well today I got home and as I was sitting in the chair he jerked his head and smacked me in the mouth busting my lip…I know he’s a puppy but damn…Anyone have any recommendations for tranquilizers for mutts?
