Email Aliases
I’ve have never in my life seen grown folks act like some of the people where I work regarding mail aliases. Personally I think mail aliases should be firstname.lastname or first intial lastname..Something like joe.blow@work.com or jblow@work.com. I love hearing the arguement “Well I’ve had this alias for X years with Y company.” My response, “Great! Go back and work for them if it’s so damn important to you.” I don’t care that your customers know you as whatever..I’d be willing to bet that if you *tell* them your new email or perhaps, and this is a stretch, give them a business card with your new email *gasp*, they just might be able to track you down in this crazy, zany world we live in…And I don’t buy the “I’ve lost so much business because I don’t have my special pony email address”.. Bullshit…The only reason you’ve lost business is you haven’t made the effort to *communicate* your new email address to your customer…The world has rules, company’s have rules..If you don’t like them, quit.
I find non-descriptive aliases annoying and unprofessional..Something like jfw@work.com drives me insane. You are not at home!! This is not your mailserver!! You work for a publicly traded company!! If these guys spent even half as much time *doing* their damn jobs instead of bitching about a goddamn email alias the entire company would be making a lot more money. Times change and company’s have to grow up…And in growing up you can simply give every user whatever the hell they want…Things just don’t work like that.
When I was in the Army I was told by my platoon leader that there are 4 ways to do things:
- Your way
- My Way
- The Army Way
- The Highway
And he said your choice is any combo of 3 and 4.
Yes this is a rant…These are my views and mine alone. If you want my “nice” reply come work for my company and catch me between the hours of 8am - 5pm. Otherwise STFU and GBTW..

Today I spent yet another 5 hours dealing with a huge piece of shit (aka The Treo “SmartPhone”). I am so fucking tired of spending so much time on these waste of space phones. And before someone says “They work fine under Windows” yes I know they work fine under windows so fuck off…just fuck off…I don’t care how well they work under windows because I don’t work for a company that uses windows…To get them to work under Linux the way our users use them is like taking a hammer and pounding a square peg into a board with no holes at all…
I fucking hate hate using them and I hate having to support them even more. My response to people who have treos and complain about them not working under Linux…FUCK OFF!!!!!

That’s right folks…This is round 2. If you missed round one check out The Orginal 10 Things That Frustrate Me. I’ve had this for a while and I’m about half way through round 3. So without further adieu:
- User who come up with “catchy” ticket titles.
- Users who insist on putting you on speaker phone and then talking over you while you tell them how to fix their problem.
- Users who bitch and moan the whole time you’re helping them with their problem and question everything you ask them to do. But then when it’s fixed act like you’re their best friend.
- Users who refuse to respond to the ticket tracker generated email. So every response opens a new ticket.
- Users who ask if they need to remember the password they just set.
- Users who don’t listen to me when I tell them the requirements for passwords and then promptly ask me if they just need some letters and numbers for their password.
- Users who keep saying “But my system is *almost* a corporate standard build so you should support it.”
- Users who insist on setting up a dial up account so they can check email while on vacation for 4 days.
- Users who say “You must get tired of answering stupid questions all day long.”
- Users who complain about “all the passwords” they have to remember.
Your wittyness is not impressing anyone.
Be quiet and listen…Who knows you might actually learn something.
Don’t think because you’re all of the sudden nice to me that I’ll forget you called me an idiot when you thought I put you on hold. Really I just muted the mic on my phone. And I do still have root access on your machine..Never forget that.
It tells you in the response what subject to put in so it gets attached to the correct ticket!
No…You don’t have to..But if you want to do your job it might be helpful.

Well..Today the justice system is officially a joke (as if it wasn’t broken already). I don’t even want to say the dumb bitches name on my blog but she was released from prison today after a 3 day stay. The reason? A health condition which is rumored to be her freaking out about being in jail!!
So…Yea her 45 day sentence was cut in half…Then she’s released after 3 days because she couldn’t handle jail… It’s absolutely disgusting and makes me sick to my stomach. If I had done the same thing she did I would damn sure be staying that entire 45 days. And I can just hear the laughter when I say that I can’t handle prison so I need to go home…Fucking disgusting…

- Managers who don’t follow the rules
Managers should lead by example. You are not a special snowflake.
- Users who say “This worked in Windows/MacOSX.” Or “This was so much easier to use in Windows/MacOSX”
Re-install Windows and then tell me how “easy” it was to get it back up and running. One thing about Linux is my networking will always work when I re-install.
- Users who bring me their Fedora/Gentoo/Ubuntu machines and expect me to support them.
I simply don’t have enough hours in the day to figure out what you’ve broken. We have a standard build..Use it.
- Users who want to watch movies/dvd/youtube on their laptops
Two words: Work Laptop. Now STFU and GBTW.
- Users who need a printer at their desk for “Confidential Data”.
There is a $10,000 copier/printer located 10ft from your desk. Walk over and get your printer job. Oh! And your “Confidential” printer isn’t confidential when you tell me to make it a network printer.
- Users who put URGENT in every single ticket they send in.
The fact that you can’t get to your banks homepage really doesn’t concern me..Again STFU and GBTW.
- Users who have worked X number of years at IBM/HP/Sun etc. etc.
I just don’t care. Sorry.
- Users who insist on having root access but have no clue what I mean when I say Google Single User Mode Linux
If you don’t know how to follow step by step directions then you don’t need root access…Trust me on this..
- Users who ask if their Blackberry is supported.
One word: NO! We don’t have an exchange server and don’t even think about forwarding company email to a third party server..Unless you don’t like your job.
- Users who call and then immediately apologize for disturbing me.
If you had any manners you wouldn’t have called me in the first damn place.

I have been dealing with an issue at work regarding a large vendor that handles our pay roll. We have a site setup to view and download pay stubs and W-2’s. This site was rolled out in August of 2006 and everything has been fine and dandy until this past weekend. Something happened/changed that now causes a simple javascript redirect to not function in Firefox anymore. If you manually change the URL to the link given in the redirect it works perfectly.
Now you maybe asking why this is such a big deal. Well, I’ll tell you. I work at an Open Source Company where it’s just not a couple of words but a way of life. I have seen the power of Open Source Software and if you are reading this blog you see it in the blog software and the server my blog is hosted on. I can, at any time, take the code for WordPress and change it to my heart’s content. There is a lot of power in that ability. I don’t have to wait for the developers to implement a feature or enhancement. I can implement it myself and then pass the code back to the WordPress devs and if they so choose they can implement it in WordPress proper.

I do not work on copy machines/network printers. Just because it has a Hard Drive, and some circuit boards and is metal wrapped in plastic still does not mean I work on it. I work on computers…Not copy machines/network printers…If I can ping it on the network then it’s up…That’s all can do. I will do the same thing that you do if it doesn’t work…restart it…call the copy machine company to send someone out to work on it…Again, I do not work on copy machines/network printers…carry on…

So this deal between Micro$oft and Novell/SUSE stinks really badly. I don’t see Micro$oft out to “help the people”. I see this as an attempt to flush Linux out of the market. I have never been a fan of SUSE Linux and this surely doesn’t help their image in my eyes. I fully agree that during this Micro$soft/Novell/SUSE “partnership” everyone who uses SUSE should migrate all their servers/desktops to something else. Yes I work for Red Hat. But I don’t care who you go with. Pick CentOS or someother distro just don’t let Micro$oft pull the wool over everyone’s eyes and destroy Linux.
I totally agree with this article.

Don’t get pissed with me when I send you a link to docs for a question you ask that’s bloody simple. I WILL NOT re-write something just to make you feel like I care!! I will read the link before I send it to you and add any additional steps or changes…Deal with it…
And I found it the same way you could have by using a little thing called GOOGLE!!!!
Rant 2:
Just because something doesn’t work on your machine DOES NOT make it unstable. All it means is:
- You don’t know what you’re doing
- You broke something.

I have changed my spam filtering for my email. I am sick of getting spam even when it’s routed to my trash folder. So I have set it to not even deliver messages marked as spam. My hosting company’s spam filter has been pretty good about catching true spam. So if anyone sends me an email and I don’t respond chances are pretty good it has been marked as spam.
